Vitamin B6 is found in three forms: pyridoxine hydrochloride, pyridoxal, and pyridoxamine, all of which must be converted into activated pyridoxal-5-phosphate (P-5-P) by the liver. P5P is the form of vitamin B6 the body ultimately uses and is necessary for a wide range of actions, including the production of neurotransmitters that help support balanced moods, a positive mental outlook, and a healthy response to stress. Vitamin B6 is also needed for glucose production and amino acid and lipid metabolism.*

P5P contains the active form of Vitamin B6, which is beneficial for:*

  • Supporting healthy blood glucose levels
  • Promoting a positive mental outlook
  • Supporting a balanced response to stress
  • Supporting a healthy mood during the menstrual cycle
  • Water retention

Product Size: 120 vegetarian capsules

What is P5P?
P5P is pyridoxal-5-phosphate, the active form of vitamin B6. P5P is necessary for the production of neurotransmitters that support balanced mood, promote a more positive mental outlook, and facilitate a healthy response to stress.*

What are the benefits of P5P?
By supporting healthy blood glucose levels and facilitating the delivery of oxygen to tissues in the body, P5P can help us maintain healthy energy levels and support a balanced stress response.*

What is the recommended dose?
The recommended dose is one capsule per day.

When should I take it?
Unlike the other B vitamins that are best taken in the morning due to their stimulating effects, P5P can be taken at any time, with food. Some individuals find that it works best for them at bedtime, as it can support the production of sleep-promoting neurotransmitters, while others prefer to take it earlier in the day.

Can it be taken with thyroid medications?
P5P should be taken at least 30 to 60 minutes away from thyroid medications.

How long can I take P5P for?
This supplement can be taken for three months to two years.

Are there any side effects that I should be aware of when taking P5P?
May cause photosensitivity (skin reactions after exposure to UV rays) and other types of skin reactions.

Excessive amounts (over 300 mg/day) on an ongoing basis may result in toxicity. Toxicity has only been associated with excessive supplementation and not dietary overload.

Research has found that B6 toxicity symptoms usually do not develop at doses of less than 1000 mg per day; however, in a subset of people, there appears to be some intolerance relating to vitamin B6 and supplementation can cause neuropathy symptoms. There are some case reports indicating sensory neuropathies (tingling or loss of sensation) at doses less than 500 mg in some patients who had been taking B6 for several months. There are no studies showing sensory nerve symptoms at a daily intake of below 200 mg per day. (2)

Toxicity typically manifests as symptoms of peripheral neuropathy (nerve pain, numbness, tremors, twitching at body extremities), gastrointestinal issues, skin issues, photosensitivity, sleep disorders, hyperesthesia (sensitivity to sound, light, smell, or touch), nausea, dizziness and ataxia (lack of coordination and muscle control).

Do not exceed doses above 300 mg daily. Discontinue if experiencing any of the following symptoms, as they may indicate toxicity: peripheral neuropathy (nerve pain, numbness, tremors, twitching at body extremities), gastrointestinal issues, skin issues, photosensitivity, sleep disorders, hyperesthesia (sensitivity to sound, light, smell, or touch) nausea, dizziness, and/or ataxia (lack of coordination and muscle control).

Consult with a physician before use if pregnant or breastfeeding.

DO NOT TAKE if taking the following medications: amiodarone, antihypertensive drugs, blood thinners, phenobarbital, and/or phenytoin
